Oberlin College Students Attend Econference 2001

by Anita Lancaster

Winston Vaughan '03 and Yuri Futamura '02 will attend this weekend's Econference 2001 in Washington, D.C. Vaughan, who serves as chair of the National Student Forum for the student PIRG's, and Futamura, the co-chair, will be joined by 50 students from Oberlin College at the three-day conference.

"The delegation from Oberlin is by far the largest group from any college or university in Ohio that will be attending the conference," says Vaughan.

Econference 2001 is a national environmental conference that brings together students with the world's foremost environmental leaders and organizations for a weekend of speakers, panels, workshops and training. Organizers hope that the conference will strengthen and unify the thousands of campus-based environmental groups that have formed around the country by mobilizing and training students to achieve immediate concrete results, and informing and inspiring the next generation of environmental activists.

Conference speakers include Earl Blumenauer, U.S. Representative for Oregon's Third District; Lois Gibbs, the director of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice; John Passacantando, the executive director of Greenpeace U.S.A.; and Douglas Phelps, chairman of the board for the National Association of State PIRG's.

Vaughan, a member of the Oberlin College chapter of OhioPIRG since his freshman year, has been invited to speak at the conference. His presentation will examine the importance of student involvement, student activism and civic education in the environmental movement. Futamura also is involved with the conference; she will host a panel discussion on environmental peace.

"Econference 2001 is an opportunity for Oberlin students to be part of the national student environmental movement," says Futamara. "It's an opportunity to acquire valuable skills and knowledge and to network with other student activists so that we can be more effective and knowledgeable at the campus level."
