Oberlin Film Society Offers Diverse Sampling of Films

NOVEMBER 8, 2001--Oberlin's Film Society (OFS) has recently revised its fall calendar; movie buffs and film addicts alike can view the new schedule online. OFS also has changed the location of the film screenings--the semester's remaining films will be shown in West Auditorium, located in the new science center. And although students usually pay a nominal fee to see the films, there will be two free films shown in November, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, on Sunday, November 11, and Reefer Madness, on Saturday, November 17.

OFS co-chair Peter Prows '02 describes the organization's primary focus as "bringing quality and entertaining films to the Oberlin community." OFS also makes a continual effort to work with other student groups and community organizations, ensuring the diversity of the films shown on campus.

In the past year, OFS has experienced an increase in membership. The organization's mailing list now includes 200 names, and 30 people regularly attend the film society's weekly meetings. A larger membership also has meant larger audiences; several films, including Moulin Rouge, were sold out earlier in the semester. But with 85 films scheduled for the remainder of the academic year, students will have plenty of opportunities to experience film offerings from OFS.

OFS sometimes invites well-known independent actors and directors to make on-campus appearances. Past events have included a presentation by David Moreton, director of Edge of Seventeen, which was partially filmed in Barrows Hall. Plans for next year's lectures are currently in the works.

Members of OFS distribute polls to students once a semester to find out what types of films should be brought to campus. Every poll lists one imaginary movie.

"My imaginary movie was Agua Ostenta," says OFS Co-Chair Goldie Greenstein '02. "It was supposed to be about the Brazilian Hedonism movement. There was a hedonism movement in Brazil, but not a movie about it. Anyhow, 33 students still voted for the movie!"

OFS holds weekly meetings (which are open to nonmembers) on Sundays at 5:00 P.M. in Wilder 109. Individuals interested in joining the OFS staff or offering suggestions about film titles are invited to attend.
