Oberlin’s Newest Study-Abroad Program Focuses on Business Education

By Debra Pillivant

MARCH 5, 2001--An intensive six-week summer school called Oberlin-in-Europe will get under way June 18 as a joint program of Oberlin College and the Center for European Studies at the University of Maastricht, in The Netherlands.

Oberlin-in-Europe will combine fully credited courses in English with the opportunity to mix with students from around the world while experiencing firsthand the life and business cultures of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands.

The program begins with a three-week stay in The Netherlands, where students will take an introductory international-business course. A significant portion of the course will be devoted to issues of intercultural communication in business and organizations. David Cleeton, professor of economics and chair of the International Studies Concentration Committee at Oberlin, will teach the course. Students will visit institutions of the European Union and major international business headquarters in Belgium, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Over the next three weeks students will take two courses--European Affairs and European Business Transformation--taught in English at the three partner business schools: HEC School of Management, in Paris; Universita Bocconi, in Milan; and Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, in Vienna. Besides the regular courses, each of the three business schools will offer a noncredit introduction to the language, business culture, and economic and social environment of the host city and country.

Students will receive three semester credit hours for the international-business course and two and a half semester credit hours each for the other two courses, for a total of eight semester credit hours.

Applications for Oberlin-in-Europe are due tomorrow, March 6. Costs are given on the program web site. David Cleeton has more information.
