OBERLIN- The Allen Memorial Art Museum is presenting a gallery talk on Tuesday, January 9, 2001, focusing on the objects in newly reinstalled Medieval case in our East Gallery. The Medieval case has prime examples of the materials and mediums used in the Middle Ages such as: Limoges enamel, German metalworking, French carved ivories, and Italian panel painting. The talk, to be given by Curator of Education Sara Hallberg, will explore the importance of these materials and techniques as well as how each object may have been used in its original context. The East Gallery is the site of the on-going exhibition Art and Artifact: Three Dimensional Masterpieces from the Permanent Collection. A number of artworks in this new display have not been on view in the museum for many years. These works include an ancient Sumerian limestone bust, a medieval French religious ivory depicting scenes from the life of Christ, an 18th-century bronze sculpture by Francesco Bertos entitled The Fall of Icarus, and a whimsical ceramic dinner service designed by the American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.
Tuesday Teas are held the second Tuesday of each month. The talks begin at 2:30 p.m. and are free and open to all. Call 440-775-8665 for more information.
