FEBRUARY 14, 2001--There's good news on the ranking front. A recent (2000) unpublished paper by Tom Coupé of the Free University of Brussels, "Revealed Performances: Worldwide Rankings of Economists and Economics Departments," supported by the Belgian federal government and the European Economic Association, ranks the top 1000 economists in the world. Using 11 weighting criteria of productivity as measured by published output, Coupé lists the top 100 and the top 300, and asks the question Where did these economists get their undergraduate degrees? Here are the answers: In the top 100, Oberlin ties for sixth place with Princeton University, the University of Chicago, and Oxford University. In the top 300, Oberlin ranks eighth, just behind École Polytechnique (in Paris) and the University of Michigan. The tables are on pages 30 and 31 of Coupé's paper. (Editor's Note: the PDF file takes a long time to download.) |
