Off-Campus Calendar Launches

FEBRUARY 21, 2001-- People can now plan connections with Oberlin folks and events all over the country and abroad by viewing the Oberlin Online Off-Campus Events Calendar, which launched today. The calendar includes, for example, off-campus performances of faculty, students, and alumni. An e-mail link makes contributing information easy. The site will have permanent links on the Online Events Calendar and Alumni pages.

The idea for the calendar came out of alumni focus groups that the Office of College Relations held around the country last year. One point that kept coming up was that many alumni wanted to find out more about Oberlin-related events in their own regions.

"The online off-campus events calendar will greatly help our mobile and busy alumni find out about Obie events in their cities or where they may be visiting," says Midge Brittingham '60, executive director of the alumni association. "Once people catch on to posting their own events, it will be even more useful."

"The new calendar also lets prospective students see if there is an Oberlin-related event going on near where they live," says John Appley, assistant director of college relations/web, who organized the project. "They have an opportunity to sample Oberlin's rich cultural life even if they can't visit campus."

The calendar includes activities such as lectures, away games for sports teams, and recitals by conservatory ensembles, as well as local events involving alumni.

"Alumni will be able to post notices about their performances, and we will be able to access detailed information about official alumni events, including updates on who's intending to come, says alumni association president-elect Clyde Owan '79, who has been closely involved with the project's development. " We'll also be able to track staff and faculty visits to our area, and this information will make it possible for us to have an informal get-together with a favorite professor or to have an informational session with a member of the College staff. This is a great tool. Let's use it early and often!"

Faculty, staff, students, and alumni can submit events for inclusion in the calendar by e-mailing events@oberlin.edu.
