AFRICAN ARTS ARE FOCUS OF KIDS WORKSHOP AND COMMUNITY DAY AT OBERLIN COLLEGE MUSEUM

The Allen Memorial Art Museum is offering spring workshops for kids and a Community Day for people of all ages. Activities will revolve around the museum’s exhibition A Matter of Taste: The African Collection at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, which runs from February 27 through June 3.

The spring 2001 KIDZHIBIT theme is African Adventures. Kids ages 6 to 12 will have the opportunity to explore the African art collection and learn how objects were used and what they mean in different African cultures. Participants will create their own tribal Diviner’s Bag using African symbols and colors, and learn how the items in the bags were used to tell the future. The workshop will take place on three consecutive Saturdays, March 3, 10, and 17, from 12 to 2 p.m. To register your child for KIDZHIBIT, call the museum’s Education Office at 440-775-8671.

This spring’s Community Day, Saturday, March 17, will continue the celebration of the African arts. The public is invited to join us at the museum for an African drum and dance performance and workshop, and to see the results of the KIDZHIBIT workshop. Community Day will feature Ilu Aiye, an Oberlin College student organization that studies, preserves, and performs the traditional rhythms and songs of the African Diaspora. Ilu Aiye is a Yoruba phrase meaning "Drums of the World." Community Day is free and open to the public and will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. in the museum, across the street from Tappan Square at 87 N. Main Street in Oberlin.
