AUGUST 31, 2001--Tomorrow is the seventh annual Day of Service for new students. Sponsored by the Oberlin College Center for Service and Learning (CSL), the day will tie into Oberlin's motto--Learning and Labor--and help students make connections in the Oberlin community and greater Lorain County. Student volunteers will assemble at 9:30 A.M. in front of Finney Chapel, on the corner of Professor and Lorain streets. Buses there will leave at 10:15 to deposit the students at six service sites. All volunteers will receive orientation and boxed lunches and be returned to campus at 3:00 P.M. Peter Ogbuji, assistant director of the CSL, encourages first-year students to participate. Students will benefit from the experience, he says, and acquire a sense of local community organizations. CSL coordinators will not turn away last-minute volunteers although they have encouraged participants to sign up early. Late comers will board the buses after the registered volunteers, or be assigned to Clark Farm, a mile east of Oberlin College, on state route 511. Activities for the day include landscaping, trailblazing, harvesting crops, weeding, composting, performing farm or building maintenance, and sorting food for local distribution. Persons wishing to participate in the Day of Service may call Peter Ogbeuji at the Center for Service and Learning, 440-775-8055, or sign up tomorrow in front of Finney Chapel. College administrators, faculty and staff, and returning students also are welcome to participate in this year's Day of Service. |
