SEPTEMBER 19, 2000--This Saturday, September 23, Warner Concert Hall will be filled with music, but the concert will not be like other concerts staged this semester; it is a benefit to raise funds for local and national AIDS organizations. Three conservatory students--Walter "Hudie" Broughton, a junior from Duluth, Minnesota; Gloria Kim, a senior from Los Angeles, California; and Rick Sanford, a junior from Bronxville, New York--organized the concert with help from New York-based Classical Action. Broughton, Kim, and Sanford became involved with Classical Action through Peter Nicholson 91, who approached the trio with the idea of starting a branch of the organization on Oberlins campus. In June Classical Action/Oberlin became chartered as a student organization. "Were the first collegiate branch of the organization," says Sanford. "We want to present a benefit concert that will raise funds for local and national AIDS organizations, but we also want to create a model that music conservatories nationwide can follow to develop their own campus organization." The concert, sponsored by on-and off-campus organizations, will include performances by Oberlin conservatory alumni, faculty, and students. Timothy Weiss, associate professor of wind conducting, will lead the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble through the musical selections, and Marlene Rosen, associate professor of singing, will perform Berios Folk Songs. Soprano Tony Arnold 89 will perform Crumbs Madrigals and tenor Carl Halverson will perform Stravinskys In Memoriam Dylan Thomas, which takes its text from Thomas's poem, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night. |
