Recent Oberlin Grad Makes Travel Over Winter Term Possible

Balint Gergely '00, on a trip back to Oberlin to publicize the International Travel Grant

OCTOBER 11, 2000--A student traveling to Asia this coming Winter Term will be able to receive financial assistance for transportation, thanks to Balint Gergely '00, an analyst for Northwest Airlines. Gergely recently gave the College an International Travel Grant, a round-trip ticket on Northwest to an Asian destination in January. Why Asia? One reason is that Northwest Airlines flies to more locations in Asia than any other airline.

"The destination also could have something to do with the five years I lived in Japan," says Gergely. "I learned a lot from that experience, and I want others to have the same opportunity."

Gergely, who attended Oberlin College on full scholarship, established the travel grant as a way to give back to the College.

"I didn't want to just write a check," says Gergely. "I wanted to do something unique and personal that would really affect a particular student."

The grant allows an Oberlin College student to travel to Asia if the student is unable to afford the planned trip without sponsorship. All applicants must be attending the College on a scholarship or with financial aid.

"I want to encourage all kinds of students to apply," says Gergely. "I'm looking for students--from the college or the conservatory--who have ideas for unique projects that will broaden their perspectives and advance their education. Hopefully, I'll be able to provide this opportunity for students again in the future."

Gergely will review the applications with a small committee and interview all finalists before awarding the travel grant.

The deadline to apply for the International Travel Grant for this coming Winter Term is November 10. The Office of Career Services, x8140, has application details.
