NOVEMBER 20, 2000--About a hundred Oberlin College students piled into buses destined for Fort Benning, Georgia, around 5:00 Friday afternoon to protest the School of the Americas, recently renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The protest was planned for this past weekend. The students were part of the national School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch).

The Oberlin SOA Watch sent one of the largest student groups to the 1998 and 1999 protests against the School of the Americas, and the coordinator of the Oberlin group—Jackie Downing, a junior from Topsfield, Massachusetts—is on the national steering committee of the organization. Oberlin Online has covered the Oberlin group's activities in recent articles.

Two who went on the protest were Aeryca Steinbaure, a first-year student from Underhill Center, Vermont, and Laura Matters, a first-year student from Lodi, California.
