Ohio Prison Activist Conference to be Held at Oberlin This Weekend

By James Blachly

Schedule of Events

NOVEMBER 10, 2000--The 7th Annual Ohio Prison Activist Conference will be held on the Oberlin College campus today and tomorrow, November 10 and 11. The conference, sponsored by Oberlin Action Against Prisons (OAAP) and the Dayton American Friends Service Committee Criminal Justice Program, will gather together student activists, ex-prisoners, attorneys, and other prisoner advocates interested in gaining suffrage for incarcerated Americans.

Organizers anticipate attendance in the hundreds. Events will include workshops, films, readings, and panels. All will take place in the King Building, with registration and directions to activities in the lobby.

While the conference seeks to mobilize activists, it aims primarily to create a network of concerned, informed, and active citizens that includes students.

"We're anticipating an educational and informative event," says Kyoto Aoki, a senior from Sanford, California, and cochair of OAAP.

Six workshops will highlight ways in which students can become involved in prison reform. They will focus on current trends in prison activism, including the effort to reign in the rapid growth of private prisons.

Luis "Bato" Talamantez, an artist and human-rights activist, will deliver the conference's keynote address Saturday at 8:00 P.M. in King 106. An acquitted member of the San Quentin Six, Talamantez has served more than 30 years behind bars and has witnessed some of the country's most violent prison uprisings. In his address, "Prisoner Rights Are Human Rights," he will talk about injustices he experienced within the American prison system.

More information about the conference is available by e-mail request.
