Community Gathers at Art Museum for Poetry Party

By Sue Kropp

NOVEMBER 17, 2000--Members of the Oberlin community gathered Saturday, November 11 at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) to celebrate poetry. Activities included poetry readings and nature walks that centered on the AMAM's current exhibit, Changing Visions of the North American Landscape.

Participants in the museum's Kidzhibit workshop performed for the audience, as did local poets Margaret Young, kidsmart coordinator at the Oberlin Early Childhood Center, and Caitlin Scott, assistant director for youth education at the Center for Service and Learning (CSL).

America Reads tutors organized a book giveaway for children attending the celebration, and residents from Kendal-at-Oberlin were on hand to read poetry to adults.

Also participating in the AMAM's community celebration were Oberlin College students Thomas Yagoda, a senior from Brooklyn, New York, and Tai Collins, a sophomore from New Orleans, who performed urban poetry.

The AMAM's next community day will take place March 24.
