Students Go Ape over Voting

By Liz Fox

NOVEMBER 2, 2000--Oberlin's electronic campus has become the guerrilla training ground for new voters, lead by the virtual reincarnation of Che Guevarra.

Early this semester, three students—Matt Pierce, a junior from Libertyville, Illinois; Noah Heller, a junior from Golden Valley, Minnesota; and Marta Perry, a junior from Fredericksburg, Virginia—created a web page to inform student voters about the candidates, the issues, and voting in general. Having virtually transformed Mudd library into the guerrilla training center "Oberlin School for American Voters", the creators claim to "combat apathy and uninformed citizenry on America's campuses." On the home page, Che Guevarra greets visitors from his flaming red Volvo convertible, and guides budding voter-guerrilla types through the ins and outs of the democratic process.

Paul Dawson, professor of politics, asked the students in September to create the site for Oberlin's voters as a continuing resource that could be updated easily for each election. The site

  • directs voters to their polling place, based on their dorm or street address;
  • presents the issues which will be on Oberlin’s ballot;
  • answers general questions about voting in Oberlin, registration, and absentee ballots; and
  • has links to candidates' web pages and other relevant sites, including a link to CheNet, which introduces 88 politically oriented web sites, rated according to their "coolness" and other criteria.
