MARCH 29, 2000--In a live Internet press conference beginning at 9:00 this morning, Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson will unveil Vision 2020, the results of a two-year strategic effort between the U.S. lighting industry and the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Building Technology. Richardson is expected to use Oberlin's Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies in his examples of how new advanced lighting technology can meet the demands of tomorrow's commercial buildings and the needs of those who design, build, own, and occupy them. The press conference will be archived on the web site. The Lewis Center is oriented along an east-west axis to optimize daylighting and passive solar performance. Its projected energy performance for lighting is 13,545 kilowatt hours a year--less than the usual budget for conventionally lit buildings. Sensors that monitor when a room is occupied "tell" the lights when to go on or off. Clanton and Associates of Boulder, Colorado, was the lighting consultant for the center. |
