Identifying Dolphins

Discovering an Ecosystem through Dolphins

"We tracked the dolphins by marks," says Clapp. The research team selected dolphins with particularly identifiable dorsal fins, whether from patterns made by a parasite that grows on them or from propeller injuries made by passing boats.

"The river is a relatively high-traffic area. Some dolphins really get nailed," says Clapp. He says they called one dolphin Stumpy because "he had no dorsal fin left."
