First speaker in series focusing on the challenges of security in the 21st century OBERLIN, OH--General Charles C. Krulak, USMC (RET.), is the first speaker in a lecture series dedicated to examining the challenges of national security in the 21st century. General Krulak will deliver his talk, "The Threat in the 21st Century," in Oberlin's Hallock Auditorium, located in the newly completed Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. General Krulak retired last year after a 35-year career with the U. S. Marine Corps--the last four as Commandant. A graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, General Krulak commanded a platoon and two rifle companies during two tours of duty in Vietnam. He then held a variety of command and staff positions, including duty as Deputy Director of the White House Military Office, Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, and Commander of Marine Forces Pacific. During his military service, he was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star medal, the Bronze Star medal with Combat "V" and two gold stars, the Purple Heart with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and many other decorations and medals. General Krulak also holds a master's degree in labor relations from George Washington University. In 1999 he joined MBNA America Bank as senior vice chairman and chief administrative officer. Oberlinšs environmental studies program sponsors this lecture series with the support of the Richard R. Hallock Foundation. Richard Reid Hallock '41, had a deep interest in issues of national security, and was an advisor to U. S. Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger. Prior to his death, Hallock met frequently with David Orr, professor of environmental studies and politics, to discuss plans for a class that would address the changing nature of security in the new century. Designed to be a conversation between a group of Oberlin seniors with an interest in public and international affairs, the course was taught in January by Professor Orr at Kendal at Oberlin. This lecture series represents the public component of that endeavor. Other speakers in the series include: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 Thursday, April 6, 2000 Wednesday, April 12, 2000 # # # |
