Faculty and Staff Notes for April 17, 2000

Nancy Dye, president of Oberlin College, was one of five women presidents of northern Ohio colleges to participate in a panel discussion, "Challenges to Higher Education in the 21st Century," at an April 8 symposium, Woman2000: Forging a Vision, held at Severance Hall and Case Western Reserve University. The symposium invited women of all backgrounds and origins to unite and define the societal and cultural conditions that most affect their personal lives and the world. Case Western Reserve UniversityÕs alumnae association sponsored the daylong event with support from corporate sponsor Medical Mutual of Ohio.

Susan Kane, associate professor of art, recently presented an illustrated talk, "An Archaeological History of the City of Cyrene (Libya)" on three college campuses: the University of Virginia at Charlottesville (February 27), the College of William and Mary (February 28), and Gettysburg College (February 29).

This past Friday a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated completion of the first of a projected 10 houses to be built in Oberlin by New Sunrise Properties, a not-for-profit corporation. Also involved in the project was the Zion Community Development Corporation, on whose 14-member board of directors sit five Oberlin College employees : Helen Fields, administrative assistant in the registrar's office; Roberta Garcia, secretary to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Fred Lassen, Protestant chaplain; Adenike Sharpley, faculty-in-residence and lecturer in African-American studies; and Maggie Terry, supervisor of campus dining at Afrikan Heritage House. Owner of the new house is Patricia Stiles, custodian.
