By Betty Gabrielli

APRIL 10, 2000--Four professionals who took their science majors and translated them into rewarding work in writing, advocacy, technology transfer, and intellectual-properties and patent law are on campus today to talk about their choices with students interested in broadening their science horizons.

Speaking will be Tom Hogan '74, founder and director of Aptagen Inc., a biotechnology firm. A mathematics major at Oberlin, Hogan went on to study electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He also is a consultant for entrepreneurs interested in venture-capital projects with a biotech emphasis.

Two alumnae who were biology majors also will talk: Pam Hines '74, senior editor of Science Magazine, who also earned a Ph.D. in biology, and Rebecca McNeill '91, a patent attorney who received her M.S. in pharmacology at Duke University and the J.D. degree at Georgetown.

The fourth speaker, Julie Rehm, has a Ph.D. in chemistry. She does science-advocacy and technology-transfer work at Battelle's Great Lakes Industrial Technology Institute in Columbus.

The program "Taking Science Outside the Lab: Options for Advancing Science through Your Career," will be presented at 7 P.M. in Stevenson's Griswold Lounge by the Office of Career Services and the Alumni-in-Service Program.
