The primary aim of this course, in compliance with the Music Education Division mission statement, is to prepare students for the art of teaching music by developing students' musicianship, pedagogy, and scholarship. The course deals with the techniques involved in the organization, administration, and preparation of a comprehensive instrumental music program at the secondary level. Includes study of methods, materials, and repertoire used to teach orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, improvisation and marching band. The study of marching band includes its performance practices, drill maneuvers, development and charting of shows, and its place in the school music program and the community.
Objectives:
Objectives in the study of marching band are:
- to develop a basic philosophy;
- to examine and become familiar with resource materials
- to understand anticipatory planning for marching season
- to be able to choose music for basic drills
- to understand rehearsal techniques;
- to develop a traditional and computer drill design.
Objectives in the study of orchestra and concert band are:
- to examine and become familiar with graded methods and materials;
- to understand factors for determining appropriate repertoire;
- to explore rehearsal procedures and techniques;
- to acquire basic repertoire reference lists and scores;
- to be aware of the benefits derived from small ensemble work.
Objectives in the study of administrative needs for an instrumental program are:
- to explore scheduling possibilities within the secondary school environment
- to consider budgetary necessities for building and maintaining the program
- to become acquainted with ways to recruit and sustain student participation
- to become cognizant of areas related to: festivals, contests, fund-raising, trips,
and uniforms.
Objectives in the study of jazz band are:
- to develop a basic philosophy of jazz education
- to examine the necessary skills for organizing a jazz band
- to examine and become familiar with graded methods and materials
- to understand rehearsal techniques
- to know basic articulations
- to understand how to teach improvisation
- to examine the validity of jazz
festivals in the total program.
