Catalog description:
A concentrated course encompassing a wide range of pedagogical approaches and materials with the objective being a better understanding of principles involved in teaching stringed instruments. Open to string performance majors and required of instrumental-emphasis music education majors. For students not enrolled in APST 273, a lab is required in addition to the class. Required for students wanting to participate as teachers in the string preparatory program.

Objectives:
The students will be able to:

  • present an idea or teaching point in several different approaches demonstrating understanding of teaching principles.
  • suggest appropriate solo and technical literature for private students based on annotated analysis done for class.
  • relate the principles of string playing to all stringed instruments.
  • discuss the evolution of string pedagogy.

Requirements:

  • Punctual attendance at and participation in each class session.
  • Attendance at three preparatory classes.
  • Completion of assignments on schedule.
  • A presentation and a teaching segment to be described further.
  • Notebook including descriptions of teaching during observations including class teaching, notes, evaluations of presentation and teaching of a segment that is videotaped.

Grading:

Attendance and participation in class sessions 30%

Take home exams 30%
