Syllabus for Introduction to Music Education: MUED 101

Catalog description: The goal of this course is to provide entering students with an overview of the total music program in a variety of school settings and to develop artistry in musicianship, pedagogy and scholarship. Demonstration and discussion of relevant approaches to the teaching of choral, general, and instrumental music at all levels. Includes observations of outreach programs. Exploration of career opportunities in music education and related fields included. Enrollment limit: 30

Objectives: The course should enable students to
- Develop an initial understanding of music education by examining:
A. characteristics of good teaching
B. interrelationships among teaching, learning, and performing
C. the development of music education in the United States
D. various pedagogical approaches used in today's schools
E. possible uses of technologies in the teaching of music
F. career options available to music education and music graduates
- Begin to participate in the music education profession by:
A. observing music instruction in culturally, racially, and socio-economically diverse settings
B. experiencing current pedagogical approaches in music
C. becoming acquainted with professional organizations and their publications and with leaders in the field
D. examining general teacher-certification preparation and Oberlin's music education curriculum
Requirements:
1. Punctual attendance at and active participation in each session. “Attendance” refers to regular classes, observations, and special presentations by guests. “Participation” means a willingness to answer/ask questions both in and out of class, a demonstration of preparedness, and an active role in discussion.
2. Completion of assignments as prescribed and on time. Written assignments should reflect careful attention to spelling, grammar, and syntax and should be typed or written neatly in ink. In some cases, assignments may be submitted on disk.
3. Observation of four community programs. (details later)
4. Attendance at presentation by Principles of Education class,(Details provided later.)
5. Maintenance of a journal in which new or different thoughts about music education are recorded. (Details provided later.)

Mini DV videotape for recording student presentations.
Evaluation:
Attendance, punctuality, and participation in class discussions/activities: 30%
Oral presentations and outlines (#1=15%, #2=25%): 40%
