NEW MASTER OF MUSIC TEACHING Program Overview

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music proudly continues its heritage of teacher education by announcing its new Master of Music Teaching (MMT) program in June 2008.

This is a 14-month Master's degree program leading to initial teaching licensure in PreK-12 Music Education, with field experiences focusing on public school and community music school teaching. The program consists of a summer session, a full academic year (including Winter Term), and another summer session. The program meets all required national, state, and professional standards for excellence in musicianship, pedagogy, and scholarship.

The program grew out of the success of the Conservatory's Undergraduate Music Education Program, which will continue to be available to the students currently enrolled in that program. New students wishing to pursue a Music Education degree at Oberlin must do so through the Master of Music Teaching program, selecting either a vocal or instrumental emphasis.

What Makes Our M.M.T. Program Unique?

  • The 14-month program (two summers and one academic year) leads to a masters degree and licensure to teach.
  • The program’s focus on public (P-12) music education and community music teaching makes it unique among music education programs in the United States.
  • Graduates of the M.M.T. program will be licensed to teach in public schools (P-12) in any state in the United States.
  • Oberlin Conservatory students currently enrolled in performance programs, have the potential to graduate with both an undergraduate (Bachelor of Music) and graduate degree Master of Music Teaching) from Oberlin College.
  • The program is housed in the internationally renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music on the campus of Oberlin College.
