Shansi Grants

Oberlin Shansi is an independent, non-profit, tax-exempt organization which operates on the Oberlin College campus. The organization promotes understanding and communication between Asians and Americans through individual and group educational programs and community projects. The aim of these endeavors is to make constructive and useful contributions to Asian and American institutions, programs, and communities. It is one of the oldest educational exchange institutions in the United States and is one of the distinguishing features of the Oberlin campus.

In Asia Study Grant
Oberlin Shansi provides $1,000 grants to support undergraduate activities in Central, East, Southeast or South Asia during either winter term or the summer. Up to SEVEN grants will be issued each year. Grants are available to students wishing to pursue in-country language study, internships with non-governmental organizations, or other individual initiatives in any country in Asia. Preference will be given to an individual, creative and independent project. Conferences are normally not funded unless some cultural exchange or involvement occurs within the local community. Recipients will be required to report their experiences back to the Oberlin community in the form of a document or public presentation, at the discretion of the student.

Priority will be given to programs that are collaborative and bring diverse communities together. Oberlin Faculty/Staff Travel Grants
Shansi offers grants to Shansi Sites in Asia and these are designed to expose Oberlin College faculty and staff to Asia where projects promise to strengthen existing ties, to provide useful information, or develop collaborative professional projects. OSMA provides round-trip airfare for short or long-term lecture programs at Shansi-affiliated institutions. Recipients of the grant are expected to reside at the Asian affiliate and give lectures in their fields of expertise, the type and frequency of which are negotiated with the Asian institution through the auspices of the Shansi Association.

Shansi Prize
he Shansi Prize is awarded for meritorious student scholarship on topics relating to Asia. To have a project entered for consideration it must be nominated by a member of the Oberlin College faculty or staff.  The project can take the form of written work, class project, research project, music composition or performance.  The Oberlin Committee of the Shansi board of trustees will consider all forms of a project, and students from all disciplines are eligible for this award.  At its discretion, the committee may award one prize, more than one, or none.  Prizes may vary, but will carry a maximum award of $500.  It is a prize for completed work, and not a form of financial aid.  The Shansi Prize will be awarded annually, coinciding with the end of the academic year, and is primarily for seniors, although exceptional work by non-seniors will be considered.  We encourage faculty and staff to nominate students whose work they believe to be appropriate for this prize
