Department of Anthropology

Anthropology concerns itself with the holistic study of the human condition. A such, it is probably one of the broadest disciplines, whose sub-fields span from the natural sciences, through the social sciences, to the humanities. It includes four main subfields: Cultural Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology,  Archeology, and  Biological Anthropology. Cutting across the four subfield is the field of Applied Anthropology.

The Anthropology department at Oberlin offers courses reflecting the breadth of our field, encompassing language and culture, area studies (Africa, Europe, and the Americas), prehistoric archeology (from the earliest evidence of human culture to the rise of ancient civilizations), human evolution, anthropological methods and theory, and multiculturalism. We strive to give our students a broad background in anthropology while also providing ample opportunity for advanced work. Our teaching is comparative and strongly interdisciplinary, linking as it does interests in the social and natural sciences and the humanities.

Anthropology has strong ties to many other disciplines, ranging from History, to Biology, to Psychology, Linguistics, Sociology, etc. Its interests are equally wide.
