Each year the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) sponsors programs and collaborates with other offices on campus in order to recognize the importance of World AIDS Week. These programs seek to demonstrate care and concern as well as to raise awareness and educate around HIV and AIDS. Recent MRC programs have included:
▪ The MRC and ELC collaborated to show "Kevin's Room" on December 4th at 7:30 p.m. in Wilder 101 as an educational program during World AIDS Week 2007. Assistant Professor of Comparative American Studies Meredith Raimondo framed the film before hand as well as facilitated a discussion afterward. The one-hour film tells the story of five black gay men struggling with issues related to community, identity, and HIV. Black Cat Productions, along with the Chicago Department of Public Health, initially produced this film as an HIV/AIDS educational tool for gay and bisexual men of color in Chicago.
▪ Dr. Karen Krahulik will give a talk titled “Trouble in Paradise: AIDS Washes Ashore — Provincetown Responds” in recognition of World AIDS Week on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. in Wilder 101. Dr. Krahulik is an Associate Dean of the College at Brown University and author of Provincetown : From Pilgrims Landing to Gay Resort.
▪ A Discussion on the Representation of HIV/AIDS and Queer Communities, Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 8 p.m. in Wilder TBA. A discussion on the representation of HIV/AIDS and queer communities facilitated by members of the Lambda Union, the Sexual Information Center, and the Multicultural Resource Center. Video, photography, poetry, and other literary selections will guide a round-table conversation about media portrayals and discourse on HIV/AIDS in queer communities. Sponsored by Lambda Union, the MRC and the SIC.
▪ Film screening of “My Brother... Nikhil” with discussion facilitated by members of the South Asian Students Association as part of reflection on World AIDS Day. Co-sponsored by the MRC LGBT Film Series December 1, 2005 at 7 p.m. in Hallock Auditorium
▪ MRC Social co-sponsored with the Office of Health and Life Skills Education. Come to the MRC social for refreshments, friends, and an informal discussion about HIV/AIDS on campus. December 1, 2004 at 4:30 p.m. in Wilder 208.
▪ Massive Passive Education Campaign – Residents Halls and Bathrooms. During World AIDS Week, watch for resources and information coming to a residence hall or bathroom near you! December 1-4, 2004.
Other MRC supported programs focused on issues related to sexual health and HIV and AIDS awareness and education during the year include:
▪ Diepiriye Kuku-Siemon presented “Comsumerism and Youth: Tales of Masculine Modernity in Urban India” as part of the “Sexuality and Sexual Health in our Political Climate” conference organized by the Sexual Information Center at Oberlin College, May 2006.
▪ Khary Polk, OC '00 is a McCracken Fellow in New York University ’s doctoral program in American Studies and gave a talk on Black male sexuality and HIV/AIDS, May 2006.
