The LGBT film series kicks into high gear this semester. The MRC has been busy working with students and student groups putting together a really amazing program. Fall semester saw the first two screenings come and go. The first, Toilet Training was co-sponsored by Transgender Advocacy Group and screened as part of Transgender Remembrance Week. The second had some help from members of the South Asian Students Association to facilitate the film My Brother… Nikhil. This film was screened as part of reflection on World AIDS Day.

These screenings were a test run for the idea that films be can the catalyst for important conversations. And while not all of the conversations happened at the screenings, the ideas of the films stayed with the audience afterwards. Our only screening in February was Brother Outsider, a documentary about the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. This screening recognized Black History Celebration. March 12th kicked off a week of screenings with the highly anticipated feature film The Aggressives. The film documents the lives of six gender bending New Yorkers as they define and redefine masculinity. The following week will include screenings for various feature and short films. Another of the series’ most anticipated screenings is for Beautiful Boxer which is co-sponsored by the My Name is My Own Series and will be screened as part of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. This film tells the story of a Muaythai boxer who uses her femininity to disarm her opponents and uses her winnings to transform herself into a woman physically.
