Black History Celebration

Empowerment: The Essence of a Woman's Work: Celebrating the 110th Anniversary of The National Association of Colored Women and the Contributions of Africana Women and Women’s Groups

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) is pleased to collaborate with students and student organizations, African American Studies, and Afrikan Heritage House on Black History Celebration each year. This year, the Black History Celebration Planning Committee decided to extend the celebration into March to symbolize the continuing importance of Black History to everyone around us, as well as giving recognition to Women’s History Month. Empowerment: The Essence of a Woman’s Work focused on Africana women tackling issues of race, gender, sexuality and class, as well as the ways in which they view and define themselves.

Lectures, films, panel discussions and theatrical performances helped to recognize the myriad of contributions that Africana Women have made to society in light of being forgotten and unacknowledged. Empowerment’s programming encouraged self-reflection and self-appreciation across age, class, and sexuality lines through messages of truth, diligence, determination and love.
