Katrina Relief Efforts
Many of us watched in horror, suprise, or disillusionment as we were inundated with images of brown people crying, screaming and/or pleading for help. Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast, devastating much of the area, but it was the breach of the levee that caused flood waters to smother the city of New Orleans in dispair and death. On Monday, September, 5, 2005, a group of schools, most of whom are of African descent, gathered at the MRC to plan the venues in which they would support the relief efforts. These are just some of the preliminary ideas that have come to fruition.
1) Fundraising efforts from local businesses
2) Hip Hop Katrina relief fundraiser at the 'Sco
3) Disbursement of clothing and school supplies to people affected by Katrina
4) Letter to the President addressing student concerns
5) Student group fundraising solely for UNCF efforts to rebuild Dillard University
We hope that the Oberlin community will remain dedicated and willing to contribute to the ventures being undertaken by our students.
