An Oberlin College Substance Free Community
The Office of Residential Education and Dining Services offers a substance free living option for students who want to live in a substance free community. Students who choose to live in substance free do so for a variety of reasons. While some may be committed to a substance free life style based on personal or family history, others may choose to live in such a community based on the environment.
The Substance Free living option is currently housed in Barnard Hall, a small, 43-bed hall, made up of students from all four classes.
Students who want to live in substance free housing are required to submit a written application. Once the semester begins, students are required to sign a contract, agreeing neither to use nor to bring any substances into the community; and also agree not to return to the community under the influence nor to bring friends into the community who are under the influence.
The house is staffed by one RA, selected for his or her commitment to substance free living. The RA works closely with a Resident Director and you.
Substance Free living has been a living option at Oberlin since 2002. In addition to the living option the program supports 'alternative' events and activities.
