Study Spaces & Lockers

Group Study Space

A number of group study rooms are available in the main and science libraries. Rooms that are open to the public are always unlocked and may be used without prior arrangement. Some of the rooms may be reserved, and groups with reservations take precedence.

Study Carrels

Study carrels are available in the main library, science library, and art library.

In the main library, any Oberlin student may request a study carrel. Carrels are re-assigned each semester; generally, two people share a carrel, and updated lists of open carrels are available at the circulation desk throughout the semester.

Requests are handled at the circulation desk on a first-come, first-served basis beginning during the second week of each semester. Students who sign up for carrels agree to abide the carrel rules.

Network Access

Personal computer usage is permitted in the southeast section of the second, third, and fourth floors and students who plan to bring in portable computers should sign-up for one of these carrels. To use the network connection successfully, students need:

Students living on campus can contact their RCC (Residential Computer Coordinator) for guidance; off-campus students can contact theCIT Help Desk.

We strongly recommend that valuables never be left in carrels unattended. This is especially true for personal computing equipment. The Oberlin Technology Store sells security cables for short-term absences (e.g. bathroom breaks, visits to Azariah's Cafe, etc.).

Scholar Studies

Scholar studies in the main library are available for use only by students participating in the senior honors program. Each honors student is guaranteed the use of a scholar study for one semester only.

Scholar study applications should be submitted to Bill Ruth during the spring semester before the senior honors project year.

Submission of an application indicates an agreement to abide by the rules for assigned scholar studies. For more information contact Bill Ruth in the main library Administrative Office during regular business hours.

Network Access

All scholar studies are wired for campus network access. Users who would like to attach their computers to the campus network should contact the CIT Help Desk to activate their connection.

Lockers

Any Oberlin student who wishes to have a secure space to store library materials in the main library may request a locker. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis each semester.

Requests are handled by Bill Ruth in the main library Administrative Office during regular business hours.
