Safety, Security and Emergency Response

In Case of Emergency

Call the Office of Safety and Security x58911

For Non-Emergency Services call x58444

Non-emergency situations may include building concerns that need prompt attention (locked doors that should be open, minor leaks or spills that need custodial services), ill students that need assistance, or any type of disturbance or harrassment due to patron behavior. Contact your supervisor first if the situation is not a dire emergency.

Fire

Every employee, including student assistants, should be aware of the closest fire exit and fire extinguisher within your immediate work area. Follow the directions you learn during fire drills for your department. Your primary responsibility during a fire alarm is to leave the building quickly and safely, encouraging patrons and others to do the same as you go. Close interior doors behind you as you leave.

Water

Leaks from broken pipes, faulty roofs, broken windows, etc., can cause extensive damage in a very short time period. If the leak is above book stacks, drape the shelving with plastic sheeting immediately, and follow posted guidelines for disaster response. Written guidelines and disaster response materials (bucket, sponges, mop, plastic sheeting, paper towels, etc.) are centrally located in each library. Ask your supervisor where they are, if that was not covered in recent training.

Tornado

Shout to patrons to move quickly to the lowest floor of the building and take a protective position in an interior hallway, closet or room without windows. Stay far away from windows and wide-open spaces. Suggestions: A-Level bathrooms and the Moffett Auditorium in Mudd; the staff work room and copier room in the Science Library; bottom of the stairway in Art; electronic classroom and cataloging areas in the Conservatory Library.

Loss of Power

Contact your supervisor. Whether or not the library remains open for service will depend on the time of day, the known cause for the power outage, and estimated time it will be restored. It may be necessary to close the library immediately to reduce the risk of harm to staff and patrons, and to help secure the collection.
