Conditions of Employment for
Student Assistants
ADA compliance/accessibility policy
Pay Rates & Payroll Schedule
The Fall 2010 minimum pay rate for new student assistants is $7.50 per hour during the academic year, with a $0.25 increase for each additional semester.
The pay rate increase for spring semester becomes effective
during Winter Term if a student works the entire academic year. Summers
count as a semester if the student is employed for a significant portion
of the summer.
Students are paid
every other Friday throughout the semester. Paychecks are sent to
OCMR boxes unless students arrange for direct deposit. Short-term loans may be arranged through the financial aid office.
Advances on your paycheck are only permitted in an emergency or in case
of a delay due to a processing error.
Performance Evaluations and Rehiring
Student assistants are generally hired
for the entire semester, if that arrangement is agreeable for both you
and your supervisor. You can expect regular evaluations of your job
performance, and are encouraged to ask your supervisor for clarification
and feedback. Questions are always welcome.
Student assistants
may be invited back to serve for successive semesters contingent upon
job evaluations, general service provided, and his/her participation
as part of the unit. Rehiring for the next semester is generally anticipated
but not guaranteed. Student supervisors may or may not rehire based
on the needs of the unit. When rehiring is feasible, your continued
library employment throughout the academic year and through the summer
is highly appreciated.
Termination of Employment
Satisfactory job performance is ultimately determined
by your direct supervisor, in consultation with the department head
as appropriate. Understanding and following the
employment guidelines,
in addition to following specific procedures for your position, are
the minimum expections of all student assistants. You should receive
both verbal and written warnings from your supervisor if job performance
is deemed inadequate, and be given an opportunity to improve. The library
reserves the right to immediately terminate the employment of any student
assistant who is grossly negligent, abuses one's privileges as a staff
member, or is suspected of criminal action.
Recognition of Graduating Seniors
Each spring, the library and
Friends
of the Oberlin College Library hosts the Metcalf Reception
to honor student assistants who are graduating that May (and those who graduated
the previous December). Students receive awards based on the number
of semesters employed by the library. The reception also honors the memory
of
Keyes Dewitt Metcalf, Class of 1911.
Study Carrel Sign-up in Mudd
One of the distinct advantages of working
in the library is gaining a better understanding of how the library
is organized and how to conduct your own research. Another advantage
is getting advance sign-up privileges for study carrels in the Main
Library (Mudd). Go to the circulation desk prior to the posted
sign-up date to stake your early claim.
Summer Employment
Many departments in the library offer full-time positions
(37.5 hours per week) during the summer months. Part-time positions in different library departments can be combined to create full time work. Summer positions are typically advertised in April;
if you need to make plans sooner, don't hesitate to ask your supervisor
to post your name to the library supervisors' email list so others will
know you are available.
