Reserve materials for nearly all chemistry, biology, geology, physics and neuroscience classes are kept behind the circulation desk of the Science library. Materials for some psychology, and environmental studies classes are there as well.
Typical reserve items for science classes include problem set answers, solutions for quizzes and exams, and sample tests provided by professors, as well as copies of certain lecture and lab materials. Photocopied articles from science periodicals are a large part of the collection, complemented by books. A few textbooks may be found on reserve, but are not available for most classes and can not substitute for purchasing required texts. A growing number of items are available electronically through ERes.
Procedures in the Science Library:
- A staff person
retrieves reserve materials for you. Please do not help yourself.
- Closed reserve materials (identified with a yellow label) may not be taken out of the library, and you must leave your Oberlin College I.D. at the reserve counter while using the item. These items may not be borrowed for overnight use.
- Do not return reserve materials to the library's book drop unless the library is CLOSED for the day. Book returns are cleared when we open and close the library, but are not checked throughout the day. Fines will be assessed for materials that become overdue while sitting the book return.
- The Reserve Browsing collection is located near the New Book shelves, adjacent to the library entrance. Some courses have a large number of books on reserve primarily as means of gathering potentially useful resource materials together. You can easily browse these materials on the open shelves. Bring them to the circulation desk if you want to borrow them to take them from the library.
Please read the Library's Course Reserve Services for an overview of library policies.
