The Information Literacy Competencies document was crafted in consultation with the Director of Libraries by the Reference Work Group, whose members are public service librarians in the main and branch libraries. We submitted the document to the General Faculty Library Committee in order to raise faculty awareness of information literacy issues and generate discussion.
Information Literacy and the Oberlin Education: A Short-Term Approach was written by the General Faculty Library Committee in response to the Information Literacy Competencies statement. The General Faculty Library Committee report, distributed to all teaching faculty, was a topic of discussion at a meeting of College department chairs. At that meeting, many faculty expressed a desire and need to "catch-up". The Dean appointed a faculty task force charged with finding a way to update faculty on these issues.
The task force included five members of the teaching faculty, the Director of Libraries, and the Head of Reference. The group decided on a workshop format, wrote the course outline and session descriptions, and promoted the workshop among teaching faculty. Members of the Reference Work Group planned and presented the first eight sessions; the ninth session focused on faculty discussion, and was coordinated by the task force.
The library staff members listed below were involved in planning the Winter Term workshop. For more information regarding the planning process, contact the individuals whose names are highlighted. Reference Work Group members who helped write the Information Literacy Competencies discussion document are noted with an asterisk (*). Megan Mitchell was the principal author. Reference Librarian Jessica Grim, who was on leave during the 1996/97 academic year and unable to participate in the faculty workshop, was also instrumental in writing the competencies document.
