Boolean Connectors:

AND:  find documents in which all words appear­no matter how close together or far apart
example: drugs AND employment AND testing

OR:   find documents in which any of the words appear

W/n:   find documents in which words are separated by no more than a specified number of words (proximity):
example: bill w/3 clinton w/10 welfare

PRE/n:   find documents in which a word precedes another and is separated from it by no more than the stated number of words (order and proximity):
example: cable PRE/3 television

Refining:

m:   modify a search request

Displaying Results:

.ci:   CITE: to view a list of citations

.fu:   FULL: to view full text of documents

.kw:   KWIC: to view a "window" of 25 words of text on either side of search terms

Precision Search:

atleast:   find documents in which a search word appears a specified number of times
example: atleast 10 (euthanasia)

headline:   find documents in which search words appear only in the headline
example: headline (France and Nuclear Test);

lead:   find documents in which search words appear only in the lead paragraphs
example: lead (aids and treatment)

Truncation:

!:  substitute any number of additional characters at the end of a word root
example: immgrat! = immigration, immigrant, immigrate

*:   substitute a single character within a word
example: wom*n = woman, women;

Limiting by Date:

date = november 13:  date is 1993

date aft 1/6/93:   date > january 10 1993

date bef 1995:   date < 6/18/93

date aft 3/93 and date bef 11/93:   date (> 1992 and < 1994)
