Ohio Academy of Science presentations

Three Oberlin honors students, an alumnus, and two biology faculty members were among the scientists and educators whose research results were presented at the Ohio Academy of Science's 104th annual meeting 28 through 30 April. Assistant professor Roger Laushman presented a paper coauthored by K. Roman Marecek '94 and titled "Genetic and sex ratio variation in Vallisneria americana populations of the upper Cuyahoga River." Laushman's three honors students this year--seniors Noah Fierer, Michael Heithaus, and Emily Norland--each coauthored with him an abstract on his or her honors project, and at the meeting Fierer presented a paper on his project titled "Genetic analysis of sycamore populations using RAPD and allozyme markers."

"Both in terms of the quality of research and in the professionalism of his presentation Noah surpassed many of the presenters there," says associate professor of biology Robin Treichel. Treichel was at the meeting, which was held at Otterbein College, to give her paper titled "Multidrug-resistant human leukemic cell line is resistant to natural killer cell cytotoxic mechanisms." She also attended a meeting of the academy's governing council. The academy's journal, Ohio Journal of Science, published all the research abstracts in its April 1995 issue.
