The only valid library card for Oberlin College employees is an Oberlin college ID; it must always be presented to borrow library materials. Employee privileges expire upon leaving the college. Retired employees living in or near Oberlin may retain their staff privileges.
Partners of college employees have the same privileges as the employee. The college provides spouses with a Family Member picture ID, which may be barcoded for use as a library card. Alternatively, one may get an Oberlin Public Library card which we will use to provide college library privileges. We do require that only one library card be in use.
Children aged 14-17 of college employees may get a special library card giving them courtesy borrowing privileges at the college library. Children aged 18 and older must use their Oberlin Public Library card for this privilege.
Loan Periods & Fine Rates
Loan periods and fines vary by the format of the material and the current demand for the item. In general, the following rules apply:

Automatic Renewals
The library balances the need of some staff for long-term use of library materials against our need to review periodically the condition of library materials and encourage their return for use by others. Each semester college employees will receive a list of all the library materials they have checked out. Materials not previously renewed will automatically be renewed for them. Materials that have already been renewed once must be brought into the library and returned or re-charged. Employees will be billed for the replacement and processing costs of books more than three months overdue.
Fine Payment
Library fines may be paid at the Main Library circulation desk and the Art and Science Library service desks during posted hours. It may also be mailed into the Main Library circulation desk. Staff who include a copy of the fine notice with payment will have the fine reduced by 50%. Fine payment is due by the end of the semester in which the fine was incurred.
