Imaginary Countries

Artistamps are created for many reasons, including the establishment of imaginary countries.  This phenomena has a precedent; as early as the 19th c. phantoms stamps have been issued by non-extant states.  There are several motivations for issuing phantom stamps: in the 19th & early 20th c., when vehicles of communication were much slower, disreputable stamp dealers deceived collectors by creating stamps allegedly issued by distant territories.  Groups hoping to establish new homelands, or those seeking independence from a country sometimes issued official stamps.  And some were created just for fun.
