Johnson was interested with networks and communication. His work took on different meanings when in the setting of a museum, a post office, or a friend or stranger’s home. The process required in mail art gave his work a new dimension, and questioned the role of the artist, the viewer, and the institution. Mail art for Johnson was a logical way to blend life and art, the individual work and the world as a whole.
