Science Library Reference Collection Assessment

Mentor(s): Alison Ricker, science librarian

Department: Science Library

Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Science librarianship; Reference; Collection Development

Number of openings: 1

Estimated length of project: Two weeks (this is a very loose estimate; the project could take quite a bit more time, depending upon how thorough one is)

Hours/day: 10am-noon, 1-3pm (flexible)

Dates available: any time during June-July

Preferred skills/knowledge: Careful attention to bibliographic details; experience with searching Global Books in Print, OhioLINK Central Catalog, and Book Review Digest.

Description: The purpose of the project is to review the science reference collection, and to

  • identify items that have been superseded by newer editions and pull them from the stacks for transfer to the regular stacks (or withdrawal, if appropriate)
  • search standard lists and bibliographic databases for more current reference works that could possibly replace older titles or otherwise enhance the collection

This project could be expanded into a review of the general collection, to identify duplicate copies and superseded editions for possible withdrawal from the collection.
