Cataloging
of Selected Internet Resources
Mentor(s): John Sluk
Department: Monographs
Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Cataloging;
Subject analysis; Automation
Number of openings: 1
Estimated length of project: 4-8 weeks
Hours/day: 2-3
Dates available: June 1-August 31
Preferred skills/knowledge: Broad interests in social
sciences and humanities; ability to work independently
Additional comments: Hours are flexible, but intern would
be expected to work at least ten hours per week, spread over at
least three days
Description: Selected internet resources are identified
on the library web pages. These resources could also be cataloged,
so that they would be retrievable in OBIS along with printed resources.
Many of the major sites are already cataloged in OCLC. Under the
direction of the Head of Monographs, the intern would learn basic
descriptive cataloging rules, and basic classification and subject
analysis for cataloging internet resources. An intern choosing
this project would need to be very much interested in learning
the theory and practice of library cataloging and classification
as they relate to web sites. This project requires creativity
and intellectual curiosity. This is detailed work, and would require
the intern to learn searching in both OBIS and OCLC (the international
database used for cataloging library materials).
