Copy
Cataloging
Mentor(s): : Becky Luedeke
Department: Monographs
Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Copy
cataloging; Technical services; MARC21 format
Number of openings: 1
Estimated length of project: 4-8 weeks
Hours/day: 2-3
Dates available: June 1-August 31
Preferred skills/knowledge: Interest in learning about
library cataloging rules and practices; attention to detail; ability
to work independently.
Additional comments: Hours are flexible, but intern would
be expected to work at least ten hours per week, spread over at
least three days.
Description: Approximately 75% of the books purchased
in the Main Library have cataloging copy created by either the
Library of Congress or by libraries participating in the Program
for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Under the direction of a senior
library assistant, the fellow would gain an overview of descriptive
cataloging rules, MARC tagging, and OBIS editing techniques. The
project requires good attention to detail, and the interest in
learning the many steps that are required for the creation of
accurate bibliographic information in OBIS.
