Fund Raising for the ALA Spectrum Initiative

Mentor(s): Ray English, Haipeng Li

Department: Library Administration

Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Public Relations, Fund Raising, Diversity

Number of openings: 6 (all interns are encouraged to participate at some point during the project)

Estimated length of project: 80 hours (total)

Hours/day: 2 per day

Dates available: August 1, 2001, could also be carried out in the Fall

Additional comments: Major portion of the project will take place in August, and the rest will be carried into the Fall.

Description: The purpose of this project is to help raise fund for the ALA Spectrum Initiative which provides scholarships for students from culturally diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing librarianship as a career. This is a nationwide effort of which this project is a part. From this project interns will learn about ALA as an organization, aspects of fund raising, details of the Spectrum Program, and the issue of diversity in the profession.
