Supervise
Science Collections Move to New Science Library
Mentor(s): Alison Ricker
Department: Science Library
Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Collection
management, supervision, database updating, processing of physical
items
Number of openings: 5
Estimated length of project: one week, plus pre-move training
Hours/day: 8am - 4pm / Mon - Fri (depending on movers'
schedules)
Dates available: June 21-29; June 21-22 for preparing
shelf labels and marking shelves, and pre-move training
Preferred skills/knowledge: experience with shelving in
LC and Dewey-classified collections, and in periodical collection
(by journal title); familiarity with Physics and Science library
collections
Additional comments: Pre-move training can take place
any time between 8:30am - 5:30pm during June 20-22. I anticipate
that will take 1-2 hours at the most. June 21-22 will be devoted
to getting all of the shelves labeled for the movers; move begins
on June 25.
Description: The entire science library collection and
portions of the main library book collection (LC classes QB-QR,
plus selected journal titles) will be moved to the new science
library during this week, along with integrating the physics reading
room collection from wherever it will have been temporarily housed
during May-June. Three IMLS interns will be stationed at the various
existing facilities (Mudd, Kettering, Wright) to oversee removal
of materials according to plan. The other interns will be stationed
in the new science library, receiving materials and supervising
placement and integration of the collections onto the new shelving.
At least two interns, possibly three, will be trained in database
updating, and will be stationed at the science library circulation
desk, to update OBIS locations for each item transferred from
Main to Science. Hand-stamping of those items will also be required.
Great attention to detail and precision in the interpretation
of the collection map is of utmost importance. IMLS interns will
assist with developing the shelf labels and making certain that
the shelves are all labeled according to the collection map.
