Supervise
Physics Reading Room Collection Move
Mentor(s): Alison Ricker
Department: Science Library
Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Collection
management, supervision
Number of openings: 2
Estimated length of project: one week, plus pre-move training
Hours/day: 8am - 4pm / Mon - Fri (depending on movers'
schedules)
Dates available: May 21-25; pre-move training during the
previous week
Preferred skills/knowledge: experience with shelving in
LC and Dewey-classified collections, and in periodical collection
(by journal title); familiarity with Physics and Science library
collections
Additional comments: Pre-move training can take place
any time between 8:30am - 5:30pm during May 14-16, or May 17.
I anticipate that will take 1-2 hours at the most.
Description: The physics reading room and its adjoining
auxillary journal storage area must both be emptied during the
week of May 21-25. The collection will be either be moved to the
new science library, if the shelving and environment is ready,
or to temporary housing in some other part of the Wright or Severance
buildings. One IMLS intern would direct and supervise movers as
they remove materials from the reading room shelves, the other
intern would observe at the receiving end to ensure that materials
are kept in order and according to plan. Another move will be
taking place during the same week, and the IMLS interns would
be involved in supervising the move of materials from three small
rooms in the Kettering science library into nearby lecture rooms
(or to the new science library, if it is ready).
