Description: The Oberlin College Library selectively employs
preservation photocopying as a way to ensure that library material
will not deteriorate and will be available for users in a useful
form for years to come. Books are sent to a commercial preservation
lab, are photocopied and bound, and are returned to us. Upon their
return, we create a new (original) catalog record for those for
which acceptable cataloging copy does not exist in the OCLC database.
The intern would learn to perform copy cataloging when a record
is available in OCLC, and to prepare original cataloging records,
based on existing catalog records for the original works, when
no record can be found in OCLC. This is detailed work, and would
require the intern to learn searching in both OBIS and OCLC (the
international database used for cataloging library materials).
