From
Wade-Giles to Pinyin: Changing the Way We Romanize Chinese in
Libraries
Mentor(s): John Sluk
Department: Monographs
Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Cataloging;
Automation; Technical services
Number of openings: 1
Estimated length of project: 3-4 weeks
Hours/day: 1 hr/day
Dates available: June 1-August 31
Preferred skills/knowledge: Reading knowledge of Chinese
preferred
Additional comments: Students with no knowledge of the
Chinese language would also qualify for this project, if they
have a strong interest in learning how library catalog records
(bibliographic and authority) work.
Hours are flexible, but intern would be expected to work at least
five hours per week, spread over at least three days
Description: The Library of Congress changed from the
Wade-Giles to the pinyin romanization system for Chinese in October
2000. This change requires libraries to update headings previously
romanized using the Wade-Giles method; for Oberlin, this involves
hundreds of headings. The intern would learn what bibliographic
and authority records are and how they interact in an online catalog,
and would make changes to both bibliographic and authority records.
The intern would work from a list of Chinese headings to be changed,
making the required changes in OBIS. This is detailed work, and
would require the intern to learn searching in both OBIS and OCLC
(the international database used for cataloging library materials).
