Providing Description, Access, and Preservation for the Oberlin College Archives Motion Picture Film Collection

Mentor(s): Ken Grossi

Department: Archives

Aspects of librarianship related to the project: Cataloguing, Preservation, Reference, and Web Application

Number of openings: 1

Estimated length of project: Three (3) weeks. Total project 45 hours.

Hours/day: 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., MTWThF

Dates available: May 30-June 19, 2001, or July 23 - August 10, 2001

Preferred skills/knowledge: Ability to pay close attention to detail, basic knowledge concerning the handling of motion picture film, do word processing, and hold some familiarity with HTML.

Additional comments: The Archives can offer some flexibility in the hours to be worked. Depending upon the skills of the intern, this project could take up to 50-60 hours. Mentor will create a work plan for the intern.

Description: This project contains four parts:

  1. The intern will review the individual film reels that constitute the film collection held by the College Archives (approximately 235 reels). Using the existing inventory and accession records, the intern will determine if each reel is adequately described. The intern will be expected to provide any missing data elements (i.e., title, dates, etc.). In some cases, the intern may be required to view the opening frames of the motion picture film reel in the A/V Department to identify data elements.
  2. The existing inventory is not currently in the Archives computer network. The intern will be required to scan or input the information, make revisions, and create a standard finding guide.
  3. The intern would be asked to place reels in new film cans (as needed). Typed labels for new and original cans and storage boxes would be necessary.
  4. The intern would be asked to do HTML markup of the completed finding guide and mount it on the College Archives web site. Assistance will be provided.
