The
Library Diversity Associate:
a graduate (post-baccalaureate) internship
Annually, the library will choose one participant to continue
as a full-time graduate intern. The studentn selected will have
both demonstrated an interest in pursuing librarianship as a career
and excelled in the undergraduate program. The graduate intern
will gain in-depth experience in librarianship and assist in coordinating
the undergraduate internship program. The graduate intern will
also work to enhance library services for minority students in
general and serve as a liaison to minority students on campus.
In the first year of the program (2001-2002), Alita Pierson OC'01
served as Library Diversity Graduate Intern. Alita worked throughtout
the Oberlin College Library system, including monographic cataloging,
reference service in both the main and art libraries, and library
outreach projects such as informational "dorm raps"
and Student Friends of the Library recruitment and programming.
Alita is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information
Science degree at the University of Washington.
Maria Paz Esguerra OC'02 succeeeded Alita for the second year
of the program (2002-2003), when the name of the position changed
to IMLS Library Diversity Associate. Maria is currently working
on projects including reference service in the main and science
libraries, collection development, and library outreach projects
such as continuing the informational "dorm raps" and
increasing Student Friends of the Library recruitment and programming.
